| The Brazilian Favelas of Rio de Janeiro are one of the most violent and dangerous slums in the world. Political raids on drug traffickers leave thousands dead every year. In the end its the women and children of these slums that are the ones who are left to suffer. A french photo-artist know only as "JR" began to give tribute to the survivors by pasting the faces of the dead on the shanties of the slum. I thought that this photo by Boston.com (see the full article here..."Scenes from Rio de Janeiro") was interesting and telling. To me it is a profound reminder of the physical and emotion destruction taking place and hopefully one that helps to stop the violence. Photo-realism isn't the only form of pop-art on the rise in Rio, fashion is also taking center stage. Noticing this rise in art should be noted, for its the wise woman who follows the artist. Often times the revitalization of a community starts with the influx of artists.
